Coastal decisions

A permitted pier is still shared space

A useful starting point

A pier may have designated areas, closures or restrictions that are not visible in an online image. Read current signs and keep walking routes clear. Control sharp tackle and loose line so they do not create an obstacle. If there is insufficient room for a considerate setup, do not force the original plan.

Try this sequence

  1. Read the local arrangements on arrival
  2. Keep paths and entrances clear
  3. Secure loose and sharp equipment
  4. Change the plan if space is unsuitable

A small worked example

An open public walking area may still have specific arrangements for fishing. Read those arrangements rather than assuming all activities are permitted. Keep the shared route clear and be prepared to change the plan if appropriate space is unavailable.

What to keep in your notes

When you review this exercise, keep the observation and the action on separate lines. Note whether the method was practical with your actual equipment and circumstances. If the answer is unclear, leave that uncertainty visible and seek the appropriate source before the next outing.
